electric lady land

110, 220, 3-phase?  I thought that I just needed outlets!  Well, maybe not really, I did know enough to think about it at least.  But after my third trip to Chinatown to get the low down on the electric situation (the situation being: determining

which machines needed 110, and which machines need 220 and then back for the plugs and then which 220 plugs were being used..what the availability of extending the power was in the new building and our options for getting more…) I am pretty convinced that I might have all of the info I need.  Mike is of course already on the ball.  He hit the ground running as soon as I gave him the machine floor-layout last week.  But it is these things that add the ‘chaos’ to the organized chaos swarming around me right now.  Things are actually progressing quite nicely but I am really feeling ‘crunch time’ approaching!  Everything needs to happen and be paid for at once, why does it always work that way!!!!!!  I really could have used one more day in the long weekend to sneak a few extra hours of uninterrupted work, I’m swamped!

Opening doors…

This week has been filled with things from every end of the spectrum of fashion and the rag business!  So many things that I am in a bit of a head spin (which I am

guessing may be an indication of how my summer will go) but all of them completely fantastic!

We have designed a custom lattice print that you will see appear in woodwork in the store as well as prints that are shown here.  We just got the samples this week and they look great.   These are printed by Harshita Lohia in her India print shop.  And then there’s the little things…. We always just had the thread for all of the garments purchased at the market in Dhaka, but now we have to select and order it all ourselves…one of the examples of how things are different here.

On to the factory, we arranged the purchase of the equipment (most of it) from

the factory in Chinatown and met the mechanics there who will be breaking down the machines for transport (NEXT FRIDAY!!!!)  Then, it became mission critical to get the door to the garment center reopened (for those of you just tuning in, we are purchasing the building next door to ours on 17th street and reconnecting the fourth floor of our building to it.  There is an existing fire door and the garment center will be there while the offices remain in this building).

And finally, or somewhere in the middle…. Mike and Andrew reopened the door to the garment center – it is sooo coool!  And I am spending my late nights and wee

hours of the morning arranging our electric configuration based on the machines so we can get the power in to the space prior to the arrival of the machines and the workers!!!!!

Heading to NYC tomorrow to source trims!  And looking forward to lunch with my friend Ruben today A. to see him and B. to actually get to eat lunch!

oh – BTW did anyone catch this weeks episode of Gossip Girl?  Someone told me that there was a scene shot at Rouge Tomate in NYC and they were (obviously) in my uniforms!

busy bee…

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

What a crazy busy week!!!!! so many things I can’t even begin so I will start with this: Yesterday Katya and were in New York.  Knowingly we had a busy schedule but everything was so intense (and fun) it turned in to a mad dash!  We started our morning at Gerber Systems.  They provide industry software (everything from design to patternmaking and product life management)  amazing!! If only I had that over the last six months it would have already paid for itself!  We liked the first part so much we decided to go back in the afternoon to see the other software types.

We were then of course late to our next appointment at Fox. They sell used and new sewing machines.  After almost running over Anna Sui on the street in our rush (remember in elementary school when you weren’t allowed to run in the

hallway so you would walk super fast all but running, arms a flutter? – that is what this looked like) You have gotta love it, I was there last week but I am not sure my description to Katya quite quantified the experience.   10 foot wide store – 3 sewing tables deep on each side of a tiny tiny isle.  The owner Eli, Jeff the Russian sales guy and the mechanic – oh, i can’t forget the tom cat.

We heckled a bit while fulfilling the list of machines we needed.  Had to go to the basement, yeah….  Finally coming to an agreement (18 machines + accessories in total) and arranging our timeline and logistics we were on our way to Edite showroom to look at Krelwear organic sweaters made in Miami!   (side note, in the mean time, I received a phone call from Chinatown and may have a better deal on the buyout of an entire factory…will keep you posted on Monday!)

After Krelwear we were back to Gerber with a quick stop for a Mr. Softy swirl with sprinkles for lunch on the way. (yes, my favorite NYC workday lunch!).  And finally to Mood to pick up some of the yardage for a few styles for fall that we hadn’t already purchased from Italy.

When getting in to the elevator (they still have an old-school manually operated

elevator), there was no driver.  He pops in and I joke about driving the elevator myself.  He then let me drive the elevator to the 3rd floor!!!!

Then it was time to get serious.  We needed about 450 yards of fabric across 10 styles for some of the small run pieces we are doing.  Tarik helped us, they are all great there and Phillip gave us a great deal!  Next time though, I think we will just go to the warehouse in NJ where we can just chose from the bulk production.  All in all a fun and productive day!

In other news this week; zoning variance for the signs was approved (next art commission), environmental clearance from the City which was the last step before the City’s stamp of approval, hired our cutter Tai (more to follow this week)…just to name a few…
